Mouse Aims at the Sky and Ground in Game Problem

Recently I had a problem where my mouse would jerk and snap to look at the sky or the ground while playing games such as Crysis, Borderlands and Battlefield 2 (these are the only games I tried). Anyway after much trial and error and searching, it turned out to be the fact that I had iz3d drivers installed, used for stereoscopic gaming. Simply disabling 3D didn't fix it, neither did exiting the progam, but once I uninstalled it the mouse snapping problem was fixed!

Hope this helps someone else.

Day 19 – Koyasan

Today we took the absolutely amazing scenic train trip through the mountains to a place called Koyasan where there is a massive cemetery high in the mountains. We got a day pass which allowed us to take the train there and back, a trip on the cable car up and down a really steep part of the mountain and unlimited bus trips around the reserve. We spent most of the day walking through the cemetery, then we visited the Tokugawa Mausolea and then walked back down the mountain until we got to a restaurant where we had dinner.

That night we decided that seeing as it was our last Friday night in Japan we should go out and celebrate, so David W, Leigh and I went to the old faithful English theme pub, The Hub and then wandered around Osaka for a while, then headed back home after being threatened with either being stabbed or shot by a decidedly non-scary Japanese gangster type.

Day 18 – Minoh

Today we caught the train to Ishibashi where we met up with Ioana, then caught the next train together to Minoh. It was a beautiful area, and even though the locals didn’t seem confident that we’d see any monkeys we set off on a quest to find some anyway.

It was a really nice walk up the mountainside in the forest but we didn’t see any monkeys. Eventually though we came to an impressive waterfall, which made a pretty good substitute! Then we set off back down the mountain and said farewell to Ioana, then caught the train home.

Day 17 – Umeda Skytower

Today we decided to visit the Skytower building in Umeda, a tall building kind of divided in two with a large ring at the top connecting the two sides. I remember seeing it when we first arrived in Osaka when we were taking the train from the airport. So we caught the train there and immediately stumbled upon a massive department store... with one whole massive floor dedicated to toys and games and music, so we stayed there a while (and saw a crazy genius just sitting on one of the pianos cranking out classical hits), but somehow in the process we lost David and David. We looked around but couldn’t find them so we just set of to the tower.

On arriving we made our way up a whole series of escalators but we really didn’t know where we were going. I remember noticing there was no-body else going up the tower though except another girl a little way behind. Eventually we reached a dead end as the escalators didn’t go any higher, when the girl who was coming up behind us asked if we were trying to reach the top. We said yes and she said she thought we were meant to get off on the third floor and take an elevator from there, so we all went back down and successfully navigated our way across to the other side of the tower where we caught an elevator the rest of the way. The view from the top was spectacular, being able to see all of Osaka in every direction. We also introduced ourselves to the girl we met; her name was Ioana and it turned out she was from Romania. We talked a while and after taking in the amazing view we went to the Skyview cafe in the tower and had a coffee. While there I mentioned that I’d love to see monkeys at some stage, and Ioana said she was actually staying not far from a reserve where monkeys actually lived! So we exchanged emails and said we’d see if we could catch up tomorrow and maybe see if we could find some.

After that we went back a pub near our hotel where it was happy hour, and I just can’t get over how cheap drinks are here. Roughly $3 Australian for a pint of Rum and Coke? You bet! :)

Day 16 – Kyoto

Today we arrived at the amazing Kyoto train station and after getting a bit lost trying to find the information place, we made our way to the Kiyomizu Temple with a balcony with an amazing view and a place to drink water which is supposedly meant to have life-giving properties. There was also a section where you take off your shoes and head into an underground tunnel that is completely dark. You follow a rail along the side of the wall that leads to a large stone lit in red from above that you spin (which is weird because it looks like the stone is floating in darkness, then when you place your hands on it they look disembodied). It was a very interesting experience.

Then we decided to try and find the Fushimi Inari Shrine, where they have a path formed by thousands of torii gates. We couldn’t figure out whether to walk or bus it, so in the end we just caught the bus and then jumped off on a random stop because we realised we had no idea where we were. Then we had a long walk trying to find this shrine, and by the time we got there it was dusk, but thankfully the trail was really well lit so we still got to walk around it. There was an impressive view of Kyoto from the top so we caught our breath there for a bit then headed back down.

That night we went to a restaurant where you get served the meat raw and you cook it yourself on a bbq in the middle of the table. It was... interesting, and I ate tongue and tripe. Not my favourite meal of the trip so far I must admit, but it was pretty fun.

This amazing tunnel of gates goes a long way, and some of them are made of stone and it is tradition to try and toss a stone and get it to land on the gate. If it lands on it you're meant to have good luck apparently. I did it twice, one smashed into a million pieces on the ground but one landed on the top without a sound, so I think that just about evens out.

Day 15 – Den Den Town

I forgot to mention I had room service last night! Had the most delicious bacon pizza. Anyhow, we didn’t really do much today. We went to Den Den Town (more electronics and toys), and what seemed to be an old entertainment district. Then we went and had some rather average ramen at a little restaurant, then went and visited some video game arcades as well as Japanese slot machines (or Pachinko) which was an experience. The pachinko rooms are so incredibly loud, and for, say, 10 yen you will be given 10 balls to put in the machine, then they go down and hopefully you win more depending on where they end up.

Day 13 and 14: Back in Osaka

I've included two days in one post today because the second day wasn't that eventful.

The bullet-train ride back to Osaka from Hiroshima went quickly (it was only one-and-a-half hours) but this time we weren’t exactly sure where our hotel was. We spent quite a while walking around confused, while slowly delving deeper and deeper into the heart of Osaka’s entertainment district. Eventually though we came to an impressive looking hotel (well I thought it looked impressive), but it turned out we had arrived about an hour too early for check-in so we ditched our bags and went for a walk around the neighbourhood. It was insane. Eventually we found our way back up to our rooms, then headed back out into the city later on to check it out in the dark and have dinner. We went down a packed mall that goes as far as the eye can see (we walked in a straight line for probably 20mins and still couldn’t see the end of it) and eventually stopped off for some takoyaki (fried balls of octopus) and set off back to our rooms.

Then today Leigh went out to visit a friend for the day so I got to have a day relaxing by myself. The bath is great but I still can’t see a point to the window, and I admit I may have spent a fair bit of the day playing games and chatting. However I did travel beyond the hotel bounds and had a walk down the mall again, and successfully found my way back without a map which was a minor miracle.

Day 12: Hiroshima Castle and Drunken Usan

Today was a fairly relaxing day, and our last day in Hiroshima. We had a look on the map and decided to visit Hiroshima Castle and its “moderately interesting museum” and “reasonable views from the top”. Well I have to say it did live up to the hype. Actually it wasn’t too bad and the gardens surrounding it were really nice. Then we walked back to the apartment and I slept while Leigh and the Davids went and got something to eat. I woke up after a while and went and bought something to eat from the convenience store next door, and it wasn’t long before there was a knock on the door and some quite happy people there to greet me. Turns out Leigh and co had found an interesting bar to celebrate our last night in Osaka, called “Drunken Usan”. It was run by a husband and wife couple, and the husband’s nickname was Usan. I got to try what was apparently some of the finest Japanese sake that they gave us as a gift for being such good customers, and a small traditional fish meal. Also the wife said I looked like a movie star but couldn’t remember the name. We suggested Brad Pitt but she said no, just slightly different. Then we went back home to bed to get ready for the next day’s trip back to Osaka.

Day 11: Itsukushima

Today we decided to take the ferry to the island of Itsukashima and see the famous Itsukashima Shrine. We set off to the train station that we would catch to the Ferry, but as soon as we got off the tram at the train station we saw a stall out the front with a massive barbeque set up selling beef on a stick. It smelt so good I got two considering I hadn’t had breakfast, and they tasted even better than they smelled. With our stomachs full of meat we caught a rickety but comfortable old train to the ferry port. The scenery on the way was beautiful as we passed through the mountains, and all the houses had lovely little perfectly manicured gardens and vegetable patches. When we got there we could see the island just a few kilometres off shore. We had decided to take the cheapest route to the island by catching the train to the closest port, but we could have caught a ferry from the river near where we were staying.

On the ferry we had an amazing view all around us of the island and the coastline, and I could see the peak of the tallest mountain and wondered what the likelihood of being able to climb up there was. Not that I thought I would be able to do it, but I wished I was fit enough to be able to if there was a path. Upon landing on the island the first thing I saw were deer walking around the streets! Not long after, one was attacking Leigh trying to get his food. We walked around the foreshore looking at all the shops and restaurants until we got around to the shrine, which wasn’t too far from where the ferry lands. During high tide the torii gate is surrounded by the sea, but when we arrived the tide was out so we got to walk right up to it. There were far less people there than I was expecting considering it is the third most popular attraction in Japan. Then we walked around the shrine area and came across more shops until we finally had to choose which path we would take if we wanted to go for a walk. We looked on the map and I was filled with the kind of confidence that only a tummy full of beef provides so I suggested we take the long walk to Mt Misen, which I was hoping was the peak that I saw on the ferry. It was also a good route because it seemed to pass a lot of points of interest along the way including waterfalls, shrines and temples and a convenient cable-car to carry us back down when we got to the top. So the decision was finally settled after a final toilet stop and we set off up the first of a great many stone steps. The walk was absolutely stunning. The forest we walked through was quiet and green and the path was narrow, and it felt like we were the only ones on the whole mountain. In fact, I can only remember passing four other couples on the whole journey up. After a fair way we came across an area inhabited by monks, but it seemed very tourist friendly and open to people just looking around. Buildings and shrines (I’m guessing that’s what they were, they had alters in them and sometimes had people or monks praying inside them) were dotted along the mountainside joined by stone paths and steps along with many statues. We soon found out though that this path led to a dead end, so we had to go back down the mountain a bit and take the path that went on the other side of the small river that would lead to a waterfall further up.

After a while we came to a fork in the road, where going right would take us to Mt Misen and going left would take us to the waterfall. We arrived there at the same time as a couple in front of us, and they seemed to think that the waterfall would be a long way up to the left so they decided to head right to Mt Misen, but David Z really wanted to see the waterfall so we set off left. In fact, the walk to the waterfall was about five minutes, and it mustn’t have rained in a while because there was hardly any water flowing down it. It was still nice though, and we used it to stop and take a break as we were starting to show the first signs of exhaustion.

After our break at the waterfall we set off back down to the fork in the road and took the right turn to Mt Misen, not fully comprehending what we were getting ourselves into. I wish I had recorded the time it took to climb each section of the mountain, because all I could concentrate on was not collapsing. Thankfully there were a few rest stops on the way, but every time we reached one I thought we had made it to the top, only to see that the path continued off in another direction. Eventually we reached a large area with two shrines and a store that HAD to be the top. There were even wires for a cable-car, but dishearteningly it wasn’t in operation. I took some photos of the view, but I have to say I was slightly disappointed that there weren’t any really good viewing points. But the sun was slowly going down and at least I could say I made it to the top. Then I looked around and tried to find Leigh and the two Davids. They were standing by another set of stairs beside one of the shrines that I hadn’t seen. I told Leigh I thought this was the top and he said nope! I was absolutely exhausted, but on we went. It was now a race to beat the sun, because I kept thinking that we might be forced to walk back down if this cable-car didn’t exist.

After falsely thinking I’d reached the top a couple more times, and nearly collapsing many more, we finally made it. The view was spectacular and we made sure we took lots of photos and soaked it up as long as we dared considering the fading light.

Soon we started the journey back down to find the cable-car. It seemed to be a long way, and it was really starting to get dark very quickly, and David W and I were still struggling to keep up with David Z and Leigh who were a fair way ahead. We could hear a beeping coming from a building barely visible through the trees still a fair way away, and I assumed it was to guide people there if they were lost or if it got dark but I’m still not sure about that. Soon though we heard Leigh yell out “HURRY WE’VE GOT FIVE MINUTES!!!” and I yelled back “WHAT, UNTIL THE LAST ONE??” and he yelled back “YES!!!!!”. So poor David and I had to sprint the last two-hundred meters to catch the last cable-car of the night. We made it just in time. We would have been in a LOT of trouble if we had missed it and I have no idea how we would have gotten back down in the dark! We probably should have checked the times for the cable-cars before we left come to think of it. Anyway, we relaxed and enjoyed the view in the cable-car and then caught a shuttle-bus from where the cable-car finished to the bottom of the mountain.

By then it was well and truly dark and the tide was all the way in, so we got to see the torii lit up and surrounded by the sea which was beautiful. Then we walked back around and found one of the few restaurants left open and had a massive sea-food feast to celebrate our victory. It was a great end to an amazing day.

Day 9: Farewell Tokyo, Hello Hiroshima (missing entry)

I realised today that I had missed a day because I couldn't remember posting any photos of Mt Fuji, so here is what I wrote for that day. It's not much, which is probably why I forgot to post it.

Didn’t really do much today except we left our hotel at Tokyo and took the 4hr bullet train ride to our new hotel in Hiroshima. The train trip went really quickly as the scenery was incredible. We even got an amazing view of Mt Fuji. We arrived at our new hotel right outside a tram stop, in close proximity to pretty much everything of interest. We spent the night watching a couple of movies in our much more comfortable hotel-room than our previous one.

More Shinkansen travel. A long trip this time, 4hrs.

Day 10: A-Bomb memorial park and museum

Leigh and I woke up reasonably early today, so we decided to try the buffet breakfast at the “Good Rice Morning” restaurant in the hotel. It was quite nice, and had a nice mix of Japanese and Western style items to choose from.

Then seeing as it was such a nice sunny day we decided to go visit what I would imagine would be the main item of interest in Hiroshima: the A-Bomb dome (one of the few buildings that remained standing after the bomb blast), and the Memorial Park and the Hiroshima Peace Museum. It was quite shocking to see, and at first we just looked at the dome and then walked through a garden and towards a castle, where we saw a man sitting beside the moat looking at the main tower playing panpipes, it was very nice. But then I thought I should have brought my camera so we went back to the hotel and got it and headed back into the dome again and looked around the park and museum. The museum was quite extensive so it took quite a while to get through so we didn’t manage to get back to the castle, and by the end we were starving and I needed something to cheer me up, so we went and got huge serves of okonomiyaki (a type of Japanese pancake made up of noodles, egg, and other stuff) served up to us on hotplates on the table. It was delicious.

Day 8: Harajuku

Today was another beautiful day in Asakushabasi. Unfortunately Leigh and I slept through half of it. By the time we got up at 1pm David W and David Z had already been shopping and returned with more fun things. They had already eaten, so Leigh and I went around the corner in search of sustenance. I saw a sign for the “Honest Diner” that had some delicious looking pancakes on it so I suggested that may be a good place to go. I was correct, they were amazing! After that David W said he would like to go see a Shinto Shrine in Harajuku, so we set off on the train and arrived in the middle of what seemed to be a ceremony celebrating the opening of a new train line. I’m not sure how we’ve managed to be so lucky stumbling upon cool things happening while we’re in town... First there was Halloween cosplay at Tokyo Disney, then there was more Halloween dressing up in shi-BOO-YEA... Shibuya and now a big party in Harajuku. Just outside the Harajuku Station was a shrine archway that led to a candle-lit walk through a forest that had been planted to celebrate the life of an Emperor that had died, and at the end of the path was a shrine where we saw them preparing for a ceremony celebrating the 90^th anniversary of the dedication of the shrine. It was absolutely beautiful, especially as night descended and the candles shone brighter lighting our path.

We then took a stroll into the city of Harajuku and checked out the fashion strip where all the young hip kids go to shop, had something to eat and headed home.

Day 7: Dude Where’s My Typhoon?

As a typhoon warning had been declared yesterday, we didn’t actually plan any activities for today beyond doing some washing and sleeping in. We definitely needed the sleep in, but by the time we got up at 1pm there was neither sight nor sound of any typhoon. In fact, other than it being overcast, the weather was really nice. So we went across the road and had breakfast/lunch at a café and did our washing and just relaxed in our room for most of the day. Then David W and David Z came down and said they would like to visit Shabuya (which would henceforth be referred to as sha-BOO-YEAH!), which I had never heard of but apparently is the place where they have the intersection that you always see on television where everyone walks everywhere at once when the lights change. We didn’t need much convincing that this would be cool, so off we went. It was actually even cooler than I had imagined, as it was Halloween and everyone was in fancy dress! After walking around like idiot tourists for a while we found an English theme pub that Leigh had been to before and stayed there for a while before heading home.

Also, today Leigh and I realised we have an extra day in Tokyo! We thought we left for Hiroshima tomorrow, but in fact we leave Tuesday! Woo!

Day 6 – Shinjuku, Akihabara (again), and the Great Tomato Soup Hunt of 2010

Today was the wettest it had been so far, so we didn’t feel bad for having slept in late recovering from Tokyo Disney. Still, we decided to brave the weather and visit Shinjuku, a big commercial district in Tokyo.

After arriving at the Shinjuku train station we picked up some food and went to find somewhere to sit down and eat (because apparently it’s impolite to walk and eat). The station was huge but we couldn’t find anywhere to sit down so after a lot of fruitless searching we eventually found our way out into the wind and rain. After an epic journey that took us over platforms, into department stores then eventually down onto the city streets we eventually sought refuge in a Starbucks. I bought a coffee so we could sit down and dry off, but after actually buying it we couldn’t find any seats, so our quest continued, now with a scalding hot coffee in one hand, and food and umbrella in the other. Finally we spotted a café in the distance and successfully managed to secure seats and ate and dried off.

After having eaten we all felt much better so we wandered around the streets until we stopped for David Z to have some teppenyaki (octopus). Then we noticed we were standing next to a karaoke place, and it wasn’t much longer before we found ourselves belting out classic rock anthems in a small room with two microphones and tambourines.

We came out of that slightly perplexed as to what had exactly just happened, but then we saw a familiar sight: a 7 floor electronics department store. After having a look through there we decided to head home and dry off.

The weather had improved a bit later that night so we decided to head back into Akihabara for dinner. We found a sushi train where I proceeded to spill soy sauce all over my pants. We then went on a quest to find new pants, but then realised we were just going to head back home anyway so it didn’t really matter.

Once we got back to our hotel, the weather was still so nice we decided to go for hot tomato soup in a can from a vending machine that David W said he had seen a few days earlier. We searched for ages and found everything except tomato soup, including sweet corn soup, curry and rice, and even a can with pancakes on the label (maple-syrup flavoured milk, but I like to think it was pancake juice.) Just as we were about to give up hope, there it was: Tomato and Basil soup in a vending machine, just around the corner from our hotel.

There was also a typhoon warning today for tonight and tomorrow, so I could be writing from Kansas tomorrow.

Day 5 – Tokyo Disney

Leigh and I had wanted to go to Tokyo Disney since we got to Tokyo, but it was getting closer to the day we would be leaving for Hiroshima and the weather forecast wasn’t looking good. However last night we checked the weather forecast and we figured today would be our last chance if we wanted to go, so when we got up and saw that it wasn’t going to rain any time soon we packed up and set off. We initially thought that Tokyo Disney was at the end of the line and that it was going to cost about $80 to get there and back, but after studying the map we realized it was actually only a few stops away and probably only cost us $6 return. Entry was about $65 or something, but all the rides were free. There's too much to say about Tokyo Disney, just check out some of the photos. It was really fun and we were exhausted by the end of the day. One interesting thing of note was that they encouraged visitors to come in fancy dress (“cosplay”) and some were so good we couldn’t tell if they were actual actors from the park or visitors.

Here we got a "fast-track" ticket for the Haunted Mansion ride. We could queue up for 70mins now to go on it, or we could come back in about five hours and show our ticket and go straight through.

All the main rides had queues of at least an hour. We couldn't be bothered waiting for Splash Mountain.

Day 4 – Akihabara pt.2

Today we went into Akihabara again to satisfy our nerd cravings once more. It rained all day, but it was still as fun as it was yesterday. Actually it was probably more fun, as we were taking our time more and we decided to visit one of the major attractions of Akihabara: the Maid Café. These are cafes where the girls who serve you dress up as maids and act ridiculously cute for an hour. It was very fun, and we all had magical “delicious” spells cast on each of our meals before we ate and got a photo with our favourite maid. Just wish we had been allowed to film it all! After that we shopped around for a little bit more and went back home for a rest.

We decided to go back in to Akihabara again later that night for dinner. We had passed an English theme pub every time we went, so we decided we should finally go in and check it out. We each ordered a meal there, but the size of everyone’s but mine was more Japanese than English, and everyone except me was still starving at the end of it. So after we left the pub we went into a massive complex nearby that was full of restaurants and had a more filling Japanese meal.

Day 3 – Akihabara (Electric Town)

Today we caught the train to Akihabara, or “Electric Town”. The games, DVDs and anime hub of Tokyo. My head exploded and now I am dead. However I shall continue to write from beyond the grave, such is my dedication to you the reader. Highlights included a 7 storey high video game arcade. a multitude of cheap electronic gadget stores, mammoth computer stores, 5 storey high anime stores and probably more that I can’t remember. It was all too much and I had to go back to the hotel room to have an afternoon nap! Later that night we decided to go for a walk and it was amazing how busy the street was at 11pm at night! I was also starving and I ate a weird noodle-filled roll. I’m not sure it agreed with me.

Oh and just to clarify, in the photo of the toilet in the first blog entry the water is coming OUT of the toilet, not going IN!

Day 2 - Shinkansen (the Bullet Train) and Tokyo

After some delicious pork buns for breakfast/lunch we ventured forth beyond the airport. The day was mostly spent in transit – either trying to find trains, waiting for trains, or on trains, or even finally in a taxi with a driver that got lost and had to pull over and ask people on the street for directions. The main trip was on the bullet train (Skinkansen) from Osaka to Tokyo where we were booked in for the first week at the Hotel Yanagibashi. It was a two hour journey and unfortunately I didn’t get a window seat so I didn’t get to see much scenery. Now, before we actually set off on the flight I was quite impressed to find out that David Z had booked a 5 star hotel for our first night and naturally thought that would set the trend for the rest of the hotels he had booked for us. So I was a bit surprised when I saw that this hotel was going to be one and a half stars, but I kept an open mind. They might have different star ratings in Japan, after all! After our taxi driver finally delivered us to our hotel we got our keys and were given a complimentary network cable. Internet! Promising. We hopped in the elevator went up to our room and… well check out the video and photos down the bottom to see what we found :)

Actually, although it may not look like much, it is actually quite cosy - with a TV, fridge, toilet, air-con and internet when we finally got it working. We ended up having McDonalds for dinner and even there I realised how lost I am without being able to communicate. I need to expand beyond “thank you” I think, so tomorrow I will attempt to use “sumimasen” (“sorry”).

Japan: Day 1 - Osaka

Having to wake up at 3am after being up late from the cd launch was a bad idea. We took a taxi to the airport and met up with the two Davids there. I was looking forward to a maccas breakfast but all the shops were closed so early in the morning except for a couple of cafes, so I just had some raisin toast, while Leigh decided to live on the edge and wait for hungry jack's to open at 5:30am (the departure time was 6am). We arrived in the Gold Coast a couple of hours later where it was really humid and had to wait in the airport for another couple of hour for our flight to Osaka.2

After the longest flight ever (actually it was only about 9hrs from the Gold Coast, and I slept for about 4hrs of it) we finally saw lights below... We were in Japan!! We navigated our way through customs and after catching a mono-rail thing to get our luggage we escaped the airport. It was overcast and raining when we made it outside. We soon found our way to our luxurious 5 star hotel rooms at the airport (which is actually a huge manmade island) and then I had my first meal outside of Australia in one of the restaurants at the airport. The lack of wifi was interesting, but I managed to pull out the ground pin of an American power converter so at least I knew I could get my laptop going. I also decided I would try and learn a phrase and number a day, so tomorrow's would be "hitots" (one) and "aregato gozaimas" (thank you).

Oh yeah, and I got to experience my very first bidet.

New food category announced!

In case you haven't heard, scientists have announced a new food category. The new group will be referred to as the "salads", and the transferal of foods from their old categories to this new category will be done in stages to minimise disruption to supermarkets. It has been suggested that the first foods to be reclassified will include lettuce (previously a vegetable), celery (previously also a disgusting vegetable), tomatoes (previously a fruit and vegetable) and eggs (previously unidentifiable).

Windows 7 and the "toolbar" problem

For as long as I can remember I have kept all my files and documents on one drive on my computer and the operating system on another. This meant if worst came to worst and Windows died for any reason, all I had to do was wipe the OS drive and reinstall it and all my files would be untouched and ready to access again as soon as Windows was working again. This may seem obvious now but hard weren't always as cheap as they are now and lashing out on a second drive was a big decision for me.

Where is this leading?

Well, since XP (and possibly earlier, I can't remember), Windows has had detachable that could sit on your desktop and display the contents of folders or drives. All you had to do was right click on the Taskbar and select Toolbars> New Toolbar and select the folder who's contents you wanted it to display. This was also a popular solution for people will billions of items in their "Quick Launch" toolbar, as you could detach it and make it span the length of the monitor to display them all.

The XP incarnation of toolbars was the best, as you could detach toolbars from the taskbar and have them floating on the desktop, or dock them to the edges of the screen and have them auto-hide like the taskbar. Beautiful. You couldn't very well ask for more. But you can always ask for less, and apparently due to the fact people would get "confused" when accidentally dragging toolbars off the taskbar, Microsoft removed the floating toolbar feature in Vista. Logic would have probably dictated that all they really had to do was set the taskbar to "locked" by default, but apparently Vista's search functionality was so unbelievably powerful, people wouldn't miss this feature.^[reference] Right. Clicking on the Start button and trying to remember the name of the folder you wanted to open, then actually typing it in, before finally trying to identify the right folder from the list is SO much faster than having a list displayed on your desktop at all times you can just click on.

Anyway.

I coped with this situation ok because you could still detach toolbars, so long as you docked them to another edge of the screen. Here's how I had it while using XP and Vista (click to enlarge).

This is on my second monitor, so my Taskbar isn't visible.

Now some genius at Microsoft decided that in Windows 7, not only could you not float toolbars anymore, you couldn't remove them from the taskbar at all, even to dock them :) Good one, idiots. Now if I want to have all the folders on my personal directory displayed for easy single-click access, I need to keep the toolbar attached to the taskbar. The best compromise I could come up with was having the folders displaying alongside the taskbar icons and dock the whole stupid taskbar to the side of my second monitor.

After scouring the internet for ages, posting on forums, finding out people were having similar problems and almost giving up after having no luck, I finally found the ultimate solution! Its name is Desktop Sidebar.

OK because no-one chose to help me I had to come up with the top 10 myself, so don't blame me if I forgot any that should be there. You also now get to enjoy my self indulgent analysis of why these were such worthy choices.

1. Sun Hits The Sky - Supergrass

Funnest song ever written. Most fun song ever written? Also the ultimate driving song on a summer's day by the beach. The only let down is the ending that drags on.

2. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys

The harmonies, the chord progressions, the song structure, the theramin..... could go on and on about what makes this song amazing. Also the great quiet middle bit that just ebbs and flows until... aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh *silence* GOOOOOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD VIBRATIONS. Genius.

3. All You Need Is Love - The Beatles

A triumphant fanfare heralds the beginning of a Beatles song that is just perfect. I love the descending horn line after each "All you need is love", and the little self referential "She loves you yeah yeah yeah" in the background at the end.

4. Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi

Pure awesome distilled and presented in song form.

5. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones

The haunting intro leads into a foot tappingly great rock song. In particular the female solo near the end is mindblowing.

6. Even Flow - Pearl Jam

The driving, unchanging chord underlying the confident then frantic vocals of each line of the verse then the explosive progression on the line E-ven-flo-oww just blows my mind every time.

7. Living Type - Powderfinger

From the only good Powderfinger album in my opinion (Double Allergic), this is another perfect slow rock song or whatever category this would be in. Inspired chord progressions make it, along with the intense lyrics.

8. Space Oddity - David Bowie

I remember reading some essay that some student had written around the time of the moon landing about how man landing on the moon had killed any future imaginaion, romanticism or creativity involving it and space in general. Well, I think this song is the rebuttle.

9. Reckless - Australian Crawl

Time goes into slow motion every time I hear this song.

10. Rainbow Connection - Kermit the Frog

A simple, melancholy yet uplifting song that worked so well as the intro to the Muppet Movie.

It's such a hard task, because there are so many criteria upon which you could judge a song. In the end, I've decided that it shouldn't be an intellectual decision, because music isn't about that, it's about feeling. ALDI Pure 8GB MP4 Player Review

Last week I splashed out on something that I didn't really need, but it was such a bargain I just had to have it. It is the $99 Pure 8GB MP4 Player from ALDI.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box (it comes in very nice packaging by the way!) was how small it is, yet how big the screen is! Then I had to try and find the buttons, as there is nothing but the screen on the face of the device, which could easily fool you into thinking the device is touch-screen. Thankfully it's not. I prefer the tactile response of buttons over touchscreens, which tend to be annoyingly inaccurate. The navigation buttons were on the top of the device, and then I found the power-switch on the bottom and the inputs/outputs on the side. Very tidy.

Anyway after poking around on the internet I couldn't find any reviews on the device, so I thought I'd put one together myself. Well, it's more of a pros and cons list of things I've noticed during a week's use than a review, but it pretty much covers everything I'd want to have known before buying it.

Huge, bright, 400x240, 3", 16:9 screen	The screen has been manufactured to be viewed vertically. This means that the viewing angle would be fine if you turned the device 90 degrees and watched it like that. However, because no movies are filmed taller than they are wide, you have to hold the player on a sideways tilt away from you so that both eyes are seeing it from the viewing angle it has been manufactured for (ie: for someone holding the screen vertically/portrait and watching it slightly from above). If you don't know anything about LCD screens and viewing angles all that probably won't mean anything to you, but you will notice that the image looks strange if you try and view a movie on it fully face-on. Max resolution for AVI files is 800x400 and 720x480 for RMVB

Uses actual buttons for navigation and not a stupid touch-screen!	Clumsy navigation, especially volume control. You must navigate to the "now playing" screen to adjust the volume, which is then a matter of clicking the "Volume" button, then checking to see that the volume number has turned red which indicates that you can now adjust it up or down with the left and right navigation buttons. However, left adjusts the volume up and right adjusts it down, when you would expect the opposite. And because you use the navigation buttons to adjust the volume, it is easy to accidentally navigate away from the page when you are trying to change the volume. Terrible design. Buttons feel like they may become spongy over time
	Other Anomalies
	If you have no music files on the device and you try to play music, it gives a red exclamation mark warning, but with no accomanying text to tell you what's wrong. I got confused the first few times this happened.
	Audio went out of sync with video on a large sized xvid AVI I tried to play (large as in a 717mb, 608x256, 1hr22min movie) This may be only specific to that one file, since I played another similarly large file and had no problems with it.
	Auto-shutdown activates when music is playing! STUPID! (This feature is meant to shut down the device after a period of inactivity to save batteries)
	Music playback can pause for a fraction of a second while you are navigating through folders on the device.

Although it may look like the negatives outweigh the positives, I haven't stopped using it since I've bought it and I rarely get annoyed with it to the point that I think any of its flaws are "deal-breakers".

There have been reports of "screen flicker" or "diagonal tearing" on the net, but I've watched a fair few movies of all different genres and haven't found this to be a problem at all. In fact, I have found the image quality to be fantastic and smooth. The only video I have noticed the flicker in is the preloaded real media demo video that comes with it. This may be a real media issue, as all the files I have watched have been AVIs.

I thought I'd write an update now that I've had more time to play with it. Some of the things are new, but some of the things have already been mentioned and have just become a bigger issue with time.

Buttons are frustratingly small. And I'm sure they are sitting lower/more flush with the casing than they were.
I'm sure I can hear audio distortion when playing music files at even a low volume. I've heard it while playing them on headphones and speakers. I can't seem to hear it all the time though for some reason.
Speaker is often so quiet as to be useless.
The radio will only play in mono. You are given the option to switch to stereo in a menu, but it doesn't work.
When selecting "continue play" on a video, it continued playing it but without sound (I just found this bug right now while testing another bug!)
Shuffle function only seems to shuffle the first 250 or so tracks (as stated elsewhere on the web).
When hitting the "next" button when in shuffle mode, it plays the immediate next track, not the next randomly selected shuffle track.
I have now seen the video "tearing" people have been talking about. However this has only occurred in one scene in all the movies I have watched, and it was at the start of Cars where there is a close-up of cars zooming by... just blurs basically. It resulted in diagonal tearing.
The volume control is painfully annoying. You actually have to be looking at the screen to make sure you are adjusting the volume (ie you can't just adjust it by putting your hand in your pocket and pushing a button). You are always at least two button pushes away from adjusting the volume.
Finally, when I sent an email to support asking if there was a way to fix the font-size issue in e-books, I never got a response. I think I might try calling them.

Still, even after all that, I can't stop thinking how much of a bargain it is for $99. I still get a lot of enjoyment out of it!

After hearing someone mention the You Yangs recently I was reminded that a while ago I was playing around with Google Earth and thought I'd take a look at them from space. I think this image really sums up the current relationship between nature and man rather nicely.
